Codeweavers, the company behind CrossOver and Wine, has released CrossOver 12.2 for Linux and Mac. CrossOver is an emulation software which easily allows to install and run a countless number of Windows applications on Linux.

The game pioneer and id Software's co-founder John Carmack has already expressed some concerns regarding the viability of Linux as a gaming platform. Now he has published a comment on Twitter, in which he said that improving Wine is a better way for Gaming on Linux than porting games to the OS.

CrossOver is an emulation software for running Windows applications on Linux. Although Steam for Linux has been in public beta for a while now, a lot of Windows applications will probably not be ported to Linux soon. CrossOver closes this gap and allows you to easily install and use a countless number of applications for Windows on Linux.

Today, the software company CodeWeavers has released a new version of the Windows emulation software CrossOver for Linux and Mac OS X. The new version is based on Wine 1.5.15 and now has a better integration with the desktop systems Unity and Gnome 3 and has a better support for transparent windows with an activated compositing manager. Also the list of officially supported applications has been extended with new applications.
